RESEARCH STATUS

Success rates vary by type of sponsor. Through FY2004, foundation and not-for-profit success rates remained relatively stable, while NIH success rates were variable (35% to 48% range), HHS/Other Federal has increased (51% to 61%) and For Profit declined in FY2003 after substantial increases between FY2000 and FY2002. FY2005 success rates are down for all types of sponsors with the exception of the For-Profit sector, where a substantial increase is noted. The drop in the success rate for NIH submissions, we believe, is due to many factors including the declining NIH budget and the increasing competition for those dollars and the increase in new faculty at the SPH who are submitting grants for the first time. We are monitoring this trend closely.
